I know, I know...Power it off and back on!

As IT professionals, we know that the running joke is that all we do is tell people to 'reboot', 'restart' or 'power cycle' your device to fix an error. But the reality is that all devices that contain electronics have 'capacitors'. These capacitors hold an electric charge even after a device is unplugged or powered off. While some capacitors, like those in microwave ovens & other appliances, can hold a charge for several minutes, or even hours...the capacitors in computers and smaller electronic devices only hold a charge for several seconds. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to remove power from these devices for 20-30 seconds to ensure that they are completely reset. And yes...it does work more often than you think! So, before you call your helpful IT professional, or even open a ticket...take a minute to uplug your computer, or restart your phone, scanner or other device(s) you're having issues with.
